Toodyay to York

Thursday 1st December

It was warm and sunny again all day, excellent weather for cycling. The route remained fairly flat and the road, despite being designated the Avon Historic Tourist Drive, had hardly any traffic.
After about 30kms I arrived at Northam, which is quite a large town with plenty of good colonial architecture still remaining:

The suspension bridge over the Avon river is the longest of its kind in Australia:

The river is particularly wide at this point owing to a nearby weir. During the summer the river level rises considerably and there is a big white water rafting event annually starting from here.

After Northam the route follows a railway line and crosses the river Avon again :

At 3pm I arrived at the day’s destination, York - WA’s oldest inland town, settled in 1831, just 2 years after Perth. I visited the motor museum which had some good exhibits:

Then checked into the Castle Hotel, an historic building not unlike the one I’d stayed in the previous night:

I spent half an hour wandering up and down the main street admiring the historic buildings:

…and enjoyed an excellent steak in a nearby restaurant:

Distance today 82.5kms.
